A Coastel Fortress

St. Tropez is a prime example of an early Sea Fortress and Marseille of their unmet peak.
The first uses a natural bay easily being covered by just one castle, but limiting the to be protected trade boats harboured.

The best way, until giving no target facing the acceptance by medication use of planet destroying weapons of massmurder like nuclear bombs, to take a castle was from land avoiding the castles big guns and protective walls.

Or an Armada sieging from sea and land.

Marseille has several castles and a forward island harbouring sloops, also known as Pirate ships for a reason, being light and swift to maneuver with only a few canons but needing only little winds creating a place for plenty of merchant ships, bigger frigate canon boat ships, diver entry points and all placed in the ends of a mountain stredge full of valleys, hide outs and pathways giving well trained physical fit locals a tremendous advantage.

You will need the "Algerians"  to defend Europe's biggest Sea Castle structure.
