If this is a Second Plague

having already the very same meta level indicators of epidemic, economic problems and civil unrest with war looming than the difference is a changing climate to the end of the Dark Mid Ages. 

We will have mutations in all biological parts of planet earth's ecosystem at some point. 

That might be the jump in exponential climate change. 

According to Darwin that will be also applicable for growth or decline, but mutationaly and not as in exponential development of both growth and decline.
