I just figured, you don't

understand The Rowing Machine. 
That is the wrong place, dude. 
Rowing machine is the most hardcore machine workout, if you do it properly.
So, you squeeze yourself as close to the front as possible, than push with your legs and when pulling with your arms lean back as far as you can to pull again to the front. 
That means you push away with the legs, pull with your arms and lean back to a as straight laying back position to reverse the movement using as much pathway as possible.
Like them, but in a gym you can lean back further.
