Magdeburg was in the GDR one of the most boring towns there. The GDR hardly new any social life outside Stalinist Party organisations. That was no Cuba or China at all.
Magdeburg had a castle structure and was build on an important river connection the Eastern South of what is today known as Germay with the Atlantic.
The entire ancient town was demolished by the Stalinist Germans hating the Aristocracy even worse than Jews and their style to rebuild the entire town. Magdeburg is also on the Western side of the river, just 50km away from the boarder fence and was most likely the actual capital of the GDR by possibly having had a major StaSi barrack infrastructure right in the tank battle grounds of WW3 getting hot, yet being a large town close to the 20km rim off emptied villages buffering the happy workers and farmers from us freaks in Jeans and Jazz music.
If there were connections beside the 4te Armee SS Totenkopfe in South Germany with the House Hanover aka Windsors than they used the Helmstadt crossing and Berlin Corridor to meet in Mahdgeborg.
If...and we might never know.
