As a lession. The two party system derives in its core from two opponing state ideas. You can't have both a Democratic or Republican state except that both principles are based on citizens vote instead of a birth right justified rule.
In Democracy, as in Demonstration, the word Demos does not mean people which would be in Greek a word Latin adopted like Kenji in Asia, popolos. The Acropolis is for the people and was publicly accessible.
Democratic means that the people vote a minority or representatives that make decisions for them under their watch in its historic core meaning.
Republican derives from the French Revolution when the people and major parts of them supporting clerics and aristocracy fought against feudalist and thereby tyrannical aristocrats to give the power back to the people which is reflected in the words re- and public.
In the Dark Mid ages Europe knew two styles of rule. A direct vote system based on open votes in a building or place deriving from Ancient Greece usually part of a three class organised people due to different lifestyles. The maps of the Holy Roman Empire of Germanic Nations was valid only for the Holy Roman Church, but not necessarily for Citizens and Aristocracy. Was Mozart's Salzbourg, Austrian, German, Bavarian or Independet and during which times? Which languages did ehe speak and with whom? In some Parliaments or Town Assemblies all three were represented making a vote first among on Yes or No of any topic to then take the decision based on a 2 to 1 or combined call of internal vote to the official decision. Mixed forms existed and kept changing over the odds of time. The U.S. juridical system still uses for some cases a version of that.
The other was Tyranny, which was ended by us killing most of them in revolutions.
