The trick is, and was since ever, to not mind the brawl. Historically, those using these tactics use blade or fire weapons and not only sticks. Today, they might only after having faced the first not kicking the shield, but having crashed inbetween two shields to kick of the fist, or ideally dagger fight.
We smacked with spears inbetween the shield formations, used our swords to pierce below into their flash or crashed inbetween them using daggers to smack as many as we could.
Or, we rushed into them in full Knight armour on a horseback using the Morgenstern swinging and bouncing off skulls.
All of that happened only to take down the last of them still standing from Arrow or Artillery fire.
