Brick houses has simple statics. Straight vertical and that's it. At a certain height the weight of will crash the lowest bricks which limits the absolute height of the building. The better the bricks are layed the closer the building can get to that height which requires machines delivering more constant clay and brick layers.
The steel structure below that chimney was part of the statics and by weakening its hull the bricks weight pulled down this part of the building.
