Large companies are utilizing open-source software (OSS) to generate an estimated
$8.8 trillion in value for which they do not directly pay in licensing fees. This figure represents the "demand-side" value—or the cost savings companies realize by using free, community-maintained code rather than building it from scratch.

Concentrated Value Creation: The majority of the $8.8 trillion in value is created by a very small group; about 5% of developers are responsible for over 90% of the value created.

Conclusion
While it is difficult to calculate a exact "lost revenue" figure (as open source is intentionally free), the disparity lies between the $8.8 trillion in value companies receive and the relatively small amount invested back into the maintainers. As a result, the community is missing out on sustainable funding, relying on a model where 60% of maintainers are unpaid, creating significant sustainability and security risks.

Open Source never was meant to be free of charge, but means to have the source code open. Someone published a very challenging definition of both source code and free over time while enforcing their own copy rights.

Corporate Spending and Settlement Scale (2025–2026)
Total Litigation Market: Spending on corporate litigation in the US is projected to reach
$32 billion in 2026, up from $30.1 billion in 2025.
Music Industry Enforcement: As of 2025, legal expenses specifically for copyright
enforcement in the recorded music sector alone are estimated at $890 million
       annually.
Massive AI Settlements: Recent copyright disputes involving AI training have led to
billion-dollar outcomes. For example, in late 2025, Anthropic reached a $1.5 billion
settlement with authors over the unauthorized use of copyrighted works.
General IP Exposure: Roughly 37% of technology companies reported exposure to IP
disputes in late 2025, with many expecting this to increase through 2026

So at around minute 12 he gives in his discussion called monolouge a clear statement of him using Co-Pilote over an entourage of assistants to get a briefing about Larry pointing out the next major shift in corporate world work, but what will the assistants do when flipping burgers is no option?
