Actually there are two ranks next to the standard ranks. Not anymore since YouTube. Those two are Seargent Major and General Major.
They derive from both the War of Independence and the Civil War and only existed in the French Military before. A Seargent Major acts alone or orders a Platoon level unit. A General Major an entire Army, Division or Brigade.
Both have special High Command or Presidential orders and can not be ordered by anyone within the normal ranks of the military, but instead have to be supported based on their mission papers stated orders by all military personal that they may order around.

An example would be for a General Major to guide a Brigade of Special Forces within an existing military campaign into a special mission, like finding Iraq Gas Factories, which turns truthful prior investigation very important considering the forces such an operation can bind off attacking main forces.
An example for a Seargent Major would be a search mission of a resistance head in Iran to then act as bodyguards being embedded with those men.
The Salute is a military form of saying Hello. Especially Reservists overdue that salute. In most field missions are since Vietnam no rank insignias worn anymore and saluting in the field is forbidden to keep snipers off inquiring targets.
No soldier of any rank may walk around on military ground to be cheered at, especially in form of collecting Salutes and most certainly not by any Officer from that very special rank that only the very most elite soldiers received, no matter the Reservists publishing might and powers, by being no part of the line of command. Yet, he may salute his valor anytime he considers appropriate respecting his achievements in duty.
If an Officer enters a room in need of attention, everyone has to Salute, acquire silence and listen to the Officers reason for that very attention.
The U.S. Military is no Aristocratic Court, but has rules to ensure combat readiness, survival and victory.
That disqualifies over blown egos and demands capability.
