The Mountaineers are part of Special Forces, usually. Special Forces is a wide spectrum and high range mountain operations are very rare in modern war fare. Most targets are either in dense urban 3rd world towns, the jungle or the desert.
Then, even in World War scenarios there is little use for facilities in high mountain ranges, except for SS strategies having had there their last stand. The infamous air plane that rescued Hitler would have been supposed to bring him and his Generals into the Alpine Eagle's Nest, which was overrun by Italian-Swiss-Austrian Partisans in reality quite early in the war. That is latterly William Tell turff... there!
In conclusion is all training of Special Forces in such terrain done for Arctic and Polar Circle mission preparation having otherwise no need in all realistic and respectable war scenarios at all. Arctic missions are attacking with Special Forces enemy harbours north of the Polar Circle which are usually Submarine or Supply installations using the most difficult natural environment as cover from large tank movements.
A small team of elite soldiers still has great chances to cut down facility operations covered as a system failure and thereby avoiding immediate large scale reactions in preparation of an own large scale attack.
