A nuclear explosion is a rapid, uncontrolled release of energy resulting from the fission (splitting) or fusion (joining) of atomic nuclei. It generates temperatures hotter than the sun's core, releasing tremendous energy in the form of a light flash, intense heat, a powerful shockwave, and nuclear radiation.
Fission/Fusion: Fission bombs split uranium or plutonium atoms, while fusion (thermonuclear) bombs use a fission reaction to fuse hydrogen isotopes.
Molecules, Atoms, Nucleus and Electrons, Protons and Neutrons, Quarks.
Protons were discovered 1917-1919, Neutrons 1932, Quarks 1964-1968
Quarks are just the currently smallest known. The official school book lesson is that in an Atomic bomb the Nuclei is split. All these parts, no matter largest or smallest are bound by a force together. They only appear to be solid by distance. Breaking off an Atom means destroying that force keeping Nucleus and Electrons which form the Atom off.
Stating that this would be like smashing a brick into two is not a good comparison, because the binding forces are much stronger. Like way much stronger. Actually, like incredibly way much stronger.
Breaking a Brick needs a hammer, in a nuclear explosion that is a classic bomb hitting its energy at an uranium core which than splits.
Now, just consider the option in Cold War and The Ocean of Lies, that they only ever managed to pulverize a highly toxic substance spreading it out into the atmosphere and air ... being a bunch of medicated greedy pigs.
Instead, take the same standard explosive, a large amount of very fine flour, create a fog of flour in a closed sealed container and hit the button that says Do Not Press.
