The enemy will dig in into trenches and build fixed points of Machine Gun positions. Those do not cut through the trees. That means understanding firing lines is important. You don't see them, they don't see you both staring at a tree or a set of trees.
Artillery is important and first the Reconnaissance Platoons advance into the forest to locate the enemy positions. European woods have small hills, little ground vegetation and very long lines of sight. So, MG Nester are really easy to spot.
The first wave is done by Artillery. Then Reconnaissance Platoons are leading the way of the Rangers attacking, which means they sneak into the wood using the tree lines to cover and take out by precision fire through firing lines in between the trees badly covered enemy forces.
Can you imagine the CIA having helped to bullshit trash talk about the worst defeat of the German SS in the entire history of the war using opposite to Sturmtruppen tactics???
