 War is the base of all progress, is a German saying. He even believes that the Computer was build for war..

Konrad Zuse built his first computers for civil engineering and aerodynamic research, not to guide the V2 rocket. His initial ideas and patent applications for program-controlled binary computing were formulated between 1936 and 1938, and construction began in his parents' living room before World War II intensified.

Why the V2 Rumor is Wrong
Original Purpose: Zuse built the mechanical Z1 (1936–1938) and the electromechanical Z3 (completed in 1941) to automate routine structural engineering and aeronautical calculations, such as analyzing wing flutter for aircraft.
 
V2 Guidance: The V2 (A4) rocket relied on an analog mixing-unit and gyroscope-based control system rather than a digital, program-controlled computer designed by Zuse.
 
Wartime Contracts: Later in the war, Zuse’s company did receive minor state funding to build specialized computing devices (S1 and S2) that calculated aerodynamic corrections for Henschel radio-controlled glide bombs, which are precursors to cruise missiles rather than ballistic V2 rockets.

1936: Zuse filed a comprehensive patent application describing the automatic execution of calculations and basic storage/control separation, laying down foundational concepts before major war mobilization.
1938: He completed the Z1, a binary floating-point machine built entirely out of mechanical metal plates and pins in his apartment.
1941: He successfully presented the Z3, widely recognized as the world's first working programmable, fully automatic digital computer. It used electromechanical telephone relays.
 
The War Impact: Development stalled and models like the Z3 and Z1 were eventually destroyed during Allied bombing raids in 1944, while his later advanced project, the Z4, was evacuated just as Berlin was occupied.

They rejected requests from Zuse and his colleague Helmut Schreyer to fund a radically faster, vacuum-tube-based electronic successor because they assumed the war would be won quickly before long-term research paid off. ## 1. General-Purpose Computers (Z3 and Z4): Minimal Use

* The Z3 (Completed 1941): This machine was never put into regular, full-scale military operations. It was placed at the Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luftfahrt (German Laboratory for Aviation) in Berlin, where scientists used it strictly for statistical analysis of aircraft wing flutter to fix flaws causing fighter plane crashes. * The Z4 (Incomplete during war): Construction began in 1942 as a more powerful commercial successor to the Z3. Because of intensifying Allied air raids on Berlin, it was repeatedly packed up and moved—first to Göttingen, and eventually hidden in a rural Bavarian basement. ## 2. Special-Purpose Industrial Computers (S1 and S2): Continuous Use

* The S1 (Completed 1942): Unlike the Z-series, the S1 was in continuous, 24/7 use until its destruction in 1944. It was used directly on the factory floor as a digital processing unit to calculate precise aerodynamic wing deviations for the Henschel Hs 293, a radio-controlled, rocket-boosted glide bomb.
