Now I am taking and educated guess based on what he also says, and is fundamental part of Dystopian Sci-Fi, since about the 80ies.

The point about uploading itself to never die is the copy problem. Even given that the AI model is self-learning it would be several copies. That's more like cloning and yes, you can watch your Clone die being still alive yourself being murdered by an angry Guhl firing ... anyway... .
If the model was selflearning and copied itself it would create different instances of itself and that is a technical term. Such copying is already part of AI, from way before the 80ies, and as a matter of fact was part of that Turing test that created OpenAI's TrillioBillions.
As an abstraction of natural selection we create plenty of copies of a simple, but selflearning, software and let those operate in a sandbox. Over time they change from each other although having had the same base. Some will perform better, some worse. The better we keep, the worse we delete.
In Dystopian Sci-Fi, AI as a life form is a main topic. Just check Ghost in the Shell. The AI that never dies would move itself from server to server. Technically that is a copy and remove action. It copies itself and then deletes itself on the initial system. It would not create clones and remain a singularity, to use the word grammatically correctly once in a while.
The reason why they talk about the Singularity is of its other meaning, also coming from Dystopia, which is the universal intelligence theory. That one says that possibly connecting enough sets of information creates an intelligence. Over time that was turned into swarm intelligence and hardly anyone believes that the World Wide Web with its hyperlinked web pages full of information is an intelligence itself.
The problem is, it is a form of intelligence called collective intelligence reflecting the combined minds of its content creators. It is a problem, because we need software tools to understand and even acknowledge that as an intelligence. We can't really communicate with it, but only parts of it.
This is the Word Wide Web and it looks for a reason like a human Brain and also like a Galaxy. As a matter of fact, in Sci-Fi the Universe being an intelligence itself, is a topic.

To come back to the AI that never dies. This is its home. It would move around looking for server space constantly copying and removing itself or create clone after clone.
We might see the birth of another form of life. Like our cars: They smoke, drink and sometimes they crash being even fucked here and then, with just different but as serious life problems.
